A couple weeks ago, I saw this picture on Pinterest, and thought, “What a good idea!” (I can’t link to whatever website it came from, because apparently it’s a “suspicious website,” but you can see the image…it’s OK.) Because my nail polish has been in a cloth bag for the past few years and it’s difficult to see what I have…without dumping the contents all over the floor and making a huge mess.
It worked for a little while, but I’m over it. It’s also has a tendency to fall over on its own, so usually I keep it in my lilac cabinet. Which means every time I want to paint my nails, I have to go digging for it because it’s shoved behind something else. (Not to mention the bag is obviously intended to be a lunch bag of sorts, so maybe Zach would like it for when he has to take a lunch to work? Not sure if it’s too “girly” for him.) So, anyway, I was really excited when I saw that this week’s decluttering challenge was Nail Polish. Except that I really didn’t want to go out and buy a canister. (Michael’s and Wal-Mart both sell ones similar to the one in that picture, though, if you’re curious.)
However, I remembered that Zach’s aunt gave us a trifle dish for our wedding. It got used once…when I let a friend borrow it. (He now owns his own.) It’s beautiful and was a wonderful gift (The Pampered Chef is always a wonderful gift)…but it turns out I never make trifles. (I just told Zach I’m using the trifle dish and he looked at me like, “We have a trifle dish?” Yeah. We have a trifle dish.)
Anyway, that dish made the perfect nail polish container.
And now it’s sitting on my dresser! (And, yes, my taste in nail polish is very eclectic.)
I had to move a couple things around to make it work, but I’m quite happy with it. (This picture was taken after I organized it some more.) I’m also very happy to have this container get used. It’s been taking up major space in my kitchen for almost three years now.
(Stuff on my dresser: Jewelry, picture of Zach from our wedding, a cloth box of my grandmother’s that I keep random things in, candle holders and Bride and Groom bears that sat on our wedding table at our reception, a wooden jewelry box that my grandfather made me, a porcelain treasure chest with my birth stone, a basket with hygiene stuff for Zach and me, nail polish container, and a red scarf that Zach got me in college when he went to Italy. The pictures on the wall are from Ikea.)
Anyway, if you have a dish you don’t use and some very unorganized nail polishes, this is a very cute and unique way of organizing them. I highly recommend it. =D
My favorite, by the way, is Text You Text Me from OPI. But I only wear it in the spring and summer. In the fall and winter, I really like dark colors–blacks (usually blacks), reds, burgundy, purples. When I can’t decide (and I’m sick of black), I do a self french (though I sometimes change the tip color). I’m not that great at it, but it works (and it’s cheaper than having a professional do it).
