A German chocolate cake cocktail is a great way to have your cake and drink it, too! These cocktails are made with almond milk, coconut rum, and vanilla vodka.
May is our anniversary month, and every year I make something different for it. It’s usually a craft. Last year, I made this letter H. The year before that, I made this wedding song art.
This year, Zach thought a recipe would be good.
More specifically, he wanted to see me try my hand at cocktails. That tasted like our wedding cake.
Um. Yes. Cake AND booze? Sign me up.
We’re weird, so our cake was German chocolate and butter pecan with a pumpkin cake for the top tier (which we ate on our first anniversary). I really hope no one at our wedding was allergic to nuts, because I had no idea until after the wedding that German chocolate also has pecans in it. None at all. Oops.
I’m still trying to think of recipes for butter pecan. I have one in mind for the pumpkin cake, but I think I’ll save it for later.
In the meantime, my German chocolate cake cocktail? Total hit. Here’s how to make it.
German Chocolate Cake Cocktail
- 1/2 cup chocolate almond milk
- 1 oz coconut rum
- 1 oz vanilla vodka (or iced cake vodka, if you can get it)
- chocolate syrup, for drizzling
- sweetened coconut flakes and chocolate shavings, for topping
Step 01: Drizzle chocolate syrup around the inside of the glass.
Step 02: Add all ingredients (except syrup and toppings) to a martini mixer with some ice. Shake until condensation appears on the outside of the mixer (showing the cocktail is properly chilled). Pour into a glass without the ice.
Step 03: Add the coconut and chocolate shavings.
This tasted as much like a German chocolate cake as I think I could possibly get! And yes, I totally made a real German chocolate cake just to compare. 😛
You can use real milk, but I greatly prefer the almond milk. It adds a nutty flavor. Plus real milk curdles very easily. Zach is good at making cocktails with real milk without it getting gross…I am not. Additionally, you could toss in some hazelnut liqueur for more nuttiness. I elected not to.
