5 Gifts for DIYers

Buying gifts for DIYers is a lot less difficult than you might think! Sure, we all have preferences and the tools we need the most are often different depending on what we’re doing. But there are a couple things that most DIYers would love to have, but probably won’t buy for themselves.

1. Genesis GMT15A Multi-Purpose Oscillating Tool

This tool is GREAT! It sands, cuts, grinds, and scrapes. Zach got me one for my birthday and I LOVE it. And because it osculates (rather than spins), it’s safe. My dad tested it on himself to prove it wouldn’t cut him (because he’s an insane person) and it didn’t. I plan to use mine on the base of my dining table.

2. O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Cream, 3.4 oz.

I realize this sounds ridiculous but stay with me. If you work with your hands A LOT, then they get dry. It’s weird and I’m not going to pretend I understand why it happens. My hands dry out horribly when I’m working on a project. Especially if that project requires me to wear work gloves. Again, it’s really weird. So hand cream would actually make a really nice stocking stuffer for someone who does a lot of DIY projects. (At least I think it would.)

3. Portable LED Light

   I’ve been wanting some LED lights for a while because they make it easier to see what I’m doing (my work room doesn’t have the best lighting) and because they would help my photography during dark, winter months. It’s not extremely high on my wish list, but it would be a nice thing to have. So if you absolutely can’t think of anything, something like this would be nice.

The Thefancy™ High Bright Portable LED Waterproof Work Light looks promising, but it only has one review. (So if you buy it, please leave a detailed review!) Ivation Portable Rechargeable Ultra-Bright LED Floodlight looks similar and gets pretty good reviews. However, both are only 10 watts. If you need something brighter, the Designers Edge L1306 108-LED Portable Bright LED Workshop Lighting would be great. I looked through the reviews and the most cited reason I saw for some of the poor reviews is because the manufacturer didn’t get the watts correct. This is a 60 watt lamp, not a 300 watt lamp.

If I had to choose, I’d go with the last one. But the one you want depends entirely on who you’re buying for. If you’re unsure, just keep an eye on the reviews.

Also, watch out for Halogen lamps. Some people like them for certain things, but they get extremely hot VERY fast and the bulbs are expensive to replace.

4. Bosch GLR225 Laser Distance Measurer

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve wished I had something like this. I frequently find myself needing to use measuring tape when I’m home alone and it’s nearly impossible to be 100% accurate if what I’m measuring is longer than my wing span. And it usually is.

This seems to be something you have to pay top dollar for if you want it to be any good. The DEWALT DW03050 165-Feet Laser Distance Measurer is Amazon’s best seller, but the Bosch GLR225 Laser Distance Measurer gets great reviews, as well. Plus it’s currently on sale for $124.26 (down from $298.48).

5. DEWALT DPG82-11C Concealer Clear Anti-Fog Dual Mold Safety Goggle

 Safety goggles are REALLY important, no matter what you’re doing. I wear them while I’m sanding, especially. Mine fog up REALLY badly, though, so having some anti-fog glasses would be fantastic. And this just isn’t something I would spring for on my own because it’s one of those things that would make my life easier, but isn’t entirely necessary.

If your DIYer uses goggles a lot, this is a great gift. Even if they already have a pair, it’s nice to have multiples for when the first inevitably gets lot. Trust me, it will.

If you want something smaller, the Dewalt DPG55-11C Clear Anti-Fog Protective Safety Glasses with Dual-Injected Rubber Frame and Temples are lower profile and also anti-fog. However, I wear contacts and sometimes the sawdust gets in my eyes even with the safety glasses. So while goggles are less comfortable, they’re better for me.
